Habits that keep your energy high

Tribe of high vibes!

Let's talk energy & habits! Two of my favorite topics that transform lives. I personally believe these two go hand in hand- strangely, yet beautifully. By definition energy is neither created or destroyed; it can just be transferred or changed from one form to another. A science nerd I am not, but that to me is so incredible. We get to decide where we put our energy- our thoughts, words, & deeds. What are you giving your energy to that is sucking the life out of you? Where is your energy blocked? Where would you like to channel more energy in a positive direction to live a life you love? YOU get to decide. That is GOOD news, especially when the weight of the world & the state of our country wants to pull us down.

We gain energy from the fuel of food, sunshine, positive thoughts, taking right action, and being in uplifting environments. It's that idea that like attracts like. Positive energy vibrates at a higher level and attracts a similar energy, thus negative energy is slower and attracts low vibration. Ask yourself what kind of energy are you putting out there day in and day out? Are you part of the high vibe tribe, or are you stuck in the lower vibration? Luckily, it just takes awareness & dedication to shift your energy. If you are stuck in low energy rut, just don't furnish it. Know you don't have to stay there. Shine the light of awareness and get to work- you are the keeper of your vibes & the power is in your hands (and between your ears). The key to this shift is breaking/releasing/transcending bad habits that keep you stuck to creating new habits that allow your energy to flow in an optimal direction. That can be challenging for so many because we are creatures of habit. We like to be comfortable. We like to know what is going to happen next. It becomes easy to fall into a rhythm that can eventually become a monotonous, autopilot, hamster wheel, day in/day out repetition of the day before. Yet the more we create positive habits, do the uncomfortable work to break old patterns that do not serve, the more energy we seem to possess. The more alive we feel.

When we practice yoga, meditation, self-reflection & give ourselves away in service, we are made to feel uncomfortable; we are challenged. Yet in the end we can be proud of our efforts. We are rewarded with more energy & motivation- but only in the moment. As Jim Rohn says, "Motivation is what gets you started. Habit is what keeps you going." Translated, the "yoga high" jump starts and elevates our energy. Yet unfortunately in one session we don't get isn't enough to sustain us throughout the rest of the week. That is why our yoga practice has to go off the mat with us and infiltrate our moment to moment life. Our yoga becomes our life and it is our daily habits that keep that energy high and the fire for life stoked.

So the questions becomes, what are most helpful habits? According to the research of one of my favorite teachers, Brendon Burchard, not all habits are created equal. He says there are bad, good, better & best habits for realizing your full potential in your life. It matters which practices in your life come first and how they are arranged to create effective habits. Which basically means we need to decide habits matter most & set up practices to strengthen and sustain those habits. We do this by aligning thoughts & intentional behaviors to experience growth, wellbeing and fulfillment. Show me your habits & I will show you your future. That is our focus from now until the end of the year. We do the work now, New Year's resolutions are not necessary. We will be living our best life through cultivating & channeling positive energy and choosing life-affirming daily habits that build the platform of our best life NOW.

At EmbodyGR on October 10 & 17, we will be working with energy & habits as concepts and as well as practical application. Yoga, meditation/mindfulness, & service are our tools to help us on the journey. Together we can do this hard work. But you gotta SHOW UP. It requires energy to form the positive habit of regularly showing up for yourself. Not just when it's convenient or have found yourself in a really difficult place. Nothing is more important than your physical and mental wellbeing- everyday. At EmbodyGR we create lives that we LOVE by being mindful of where we put our energy & how we show up each week and every moment. Buckle up because we are gonna go out of 2018 with a roar! Let's make every single day matter because YOU matter. Our world needs each of us!

Positive vibes & high fives,

What to do with your feelings about the Kavanagh hearings and other news

Tribe of love!

Our world has been full of news recently that has taken many people to a place of darkness, anger, fear, and shame. The 'job interview' for Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh has created important conversation, for women in particular, around sexual assault. This brings up past experiences which may have been personal or may have happened to someone they intimately know. Not only is it important for people come forward, we also need to be reminded how challenging it is for them to do so. Whatever stance you take for the confirmation of Kavanaugh, it is the courage of Dr. Ford that I wish to bring to light. This is a woman who did not need to share her story. Her courage, though she was shaking, perpetually on the verge of tears, while struggling to stay strong and focused... she persevered. She spoke her truth as a civic duty. She felt she could not sit back and be silent. To me, that is inspirational. And to her I feel indebted.

Many beautiful souls reached out to me directly, posted on facebook, and shared their stories, concerns, and confusion over what to DO about this issue in their lives. Sharing the stories is HUGE which then immediately following poses the question of what's next. So... I live by the saying that action cures fear. As a result, I personally put together an impromptu gratitude flash mob at my home this past Sunday!!! During these difficult days I felt I could offer a community of women who care & feel very deeply a place to take positive action. Literally, from inspiration to implementation it was 18 hours. I simply invited people to come over on a Sunday morning in their jammies to drink coffee & write letters to say thanks to Dr. Ford for taking a stand for all women; for being a voice for women.

I believe deeply in the practice of gratitude as an ACTION, not just a feeling of the heart. Actual pen to paper, snail mail thank you notes. I have done that since I was a small child well trained by my mom in the art of thank you letter writing (she is an English teacher :) I learned the power of small actions having a huge impact not only upon the person receiving the gesture but upon myself as well.

At Embody this week we are going to blend the practices of yoga, mindfulness, & gratitude together as an alchemy of healing. As a collective heart we will breathe & move with deep intention and then write an actual letter to one woman of our individual choosing that we admire who has used her voice courageously in the world to move the needle in a positive direction. This practice heals, transforms, and allows one to move with more grace and ease during especially the darkest of hours. It is scientifically proven that people who actively practice gratitude are happier & show fewer signs of depression. Research shows those who wrote gratitude letters reported significantly better mental health four weeks and 12 weeks after their writing exercise ended. This suggests that gratitude writing can be beneficial not just for healthy, well-adjusted individuals, but also for those who struggle with mental health concerns.

According to a recent article in HuffPost, there are 4 major benefits to gratitude:
1. Routinely practicing gratitude helps us experience increased positive emotions including interest, excitement, joy and pride.
2. Gratitude promotes optimism, which leads to greater well-being.
3.  Expressing gratitude strengthens relationships.

4.  If you receive gratefulness, you’re probably likely to pay it forward.

Show up this Wednesday and let your life be your laboratory. Let your practices come from your heart. Let your life be healed & inspired in the ways needed to be free to move forward and live a life you LOVE!

Bring a friend so we can share the "Feel Better Do Good" movement with all the people who need our circle of care.

Ever grateful,
Dana
